The name "Italicus" comes from the Latin "Italicus," meaning Italy, where the plant was first described. The French name "immortelle" (everlasting) is thought to derive from the long preservation of dried bouquets. Italian everlasting is endemic to the Mediterranean region, but the particular chemotype found in Corsica for this subspecies is entirely specific to this island. The flowering tops of Helichrysum italicum are distilled to produce an essential oil with antioxidant, antibacterial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bruising properties. Helichrysum floral water is suitable for all skin types and soothes heartburn, sunburn, acne, emotional bruising, and wrinkles.
